MY LITTLE PONY SIGHTINGS IN COLLEGIATE PUBLICATIONS

The following photo appeared on page 188 of the 1996 issue of the Warbler, the yearbook for Eastern Illinois University. This yearbook was given to random students who attended NISPA, the Northern Illinois Scholastic Press Association meeting, in order to entice these students into applying for the journalism program at the university. It was impossible to scan the entire page with the article and the caption about the photo below, but both have been typed out for you to read. The caption appears to the left side of the photo as it does in the yearbook, and the article is presented in the best possible imitation of its original three-column format.

CIRCUS ART
Students recreate Calder's wire circus

Twist by twist, introductory art students manipulated wire into the shapes that they wanted. Bit by bit, a miniature circus, full of acrobats, clowns, animals and spectators appeared.

More than one hundred students participated in designing the circus—a replication of an early 20th century artist's work. The project was displayed to the public Dec. 2.

"We were inspired by the work of Alexander Calder, who made a circus out of wire and displayed in Paris in 1926," Kathy Bartell, an assistant professor in the art department, said.

The circus included every aspect of a typical childhood circus from acrobats balancing in a pyramid formation to an extensive tight rope act with a safety net below to a parade complete with a performing dog.

The circus was divided into several parts including acrobats, animals, clowns, and parade. All six of Bartell's introductory art classes were divided into groups and assigned a section of the
circus to create.
Between the groups, the entire circus emerged.

"The students weren't restricted to the section they were assigned. If they wanted to create a clown and it wasn't in their section, they could go ahead and make one."

In order to get the desired effects, students employed creative methods. Bartell said they "started with wire sculpting and were allowed to use their imagination for the other materials."

After the shells of the creations were finished, the artists decorated the wire with a variety of materials including brightly colored cloth, sequins, styrofoam balls and aluminum foil.

Buffie Gulvas, a freshman elementary education major, said coming up with the ideas of how to make each part stretched the creativity of the students.

"For the stadium, we took a base and made it into a square. Then, we ran doll rods up and tied them together. We glued cardboard across them to make the seats," Gulvas said. "It was pretty hard."

When the project was displayed, visitors could see colorful clowns with bright red noses entertain the crowd as another performer prepared to be shot out of a cannon. A tall man on stilts towered above other performers at the front of a parade as a show dog attempted to jump through a hoop.

Bartell said that the final product was "even better than I had hoped for. We have done similar projects in the past and are always trying to come up with something the students can do collaboratively."

At the end of the project, some of the students were surprised that they had managed to pull it off.

"When I first heard about it (the miniature circus), I thought it sounded kind of dumb—like something that you'd do in grade school," Gulvas said. "I enjoyed it though. We ended up being amazed that we could do this. It was fun."

MY LITTLE PONY SIGHTINGS IN NON-MLP ADVERTISEMENTS

To the right is a most interesting sample of a UPS! This is an advertisement for a bike which is evidently called a "pony," featuring the new 1998 pony Clever Clover taking a ride on a model rocket (in other words, soon to be a UFP-Unidentified Flying Pony)! The captions read "Marla's Little Pony, 1977" for the top image (which is rather odd, as the ponies pictured are copyrighted 1997), and "Marla's Little Pony, 1999" for the bottom image. Apparently, the advertiser is attempting to show that Marla always enjoyed playing rough. As a child, Marla tied her toy pony to a rocketship, while the other little girls in the background combed the manes and tails of their ponies, and as an adult, Marla endures tough races!

MY LITTLE PONY SIGHTINGS IN NON-MLP COMICS

Peace found a My Little Pony picture in a comic book she reads, titled "Hackmasters of Evernight."  Apparently, at the end of the comic, the pony meets a sad fate, which will not be described here.

MY LITTLE PONY SIGHTINGS IN COMPUTER GAMES

The following pony sighting was discovered at the end of a Shockwave game called "The Washed-Up Celebrity Dunking Booth." After the game is won, by sinking all the celebrities, the winner can choose one of three "prizes." The prize behind Curtain #3 is none other than So-Soft Twilight the My Little Pony. Under the pony's picture is a caption.  To play the game, click on the screen shot below.

Sunset discovered a My Little Pony question on the computer game show "You Don't Know Jack!"  Sunset tells us that the question was, "What do you get when you combine Gusty, Fizzy and a princess pony?"  The answer was "Baby Princess B****-a-lot."   Evidently when you answer the question correctly, the game announcer shows off a Baby Tiddleywinks pony and talks to her, then claims that she belongs to his sister.

If you have a screen shot of this scene of the game, please
send it in

MY LITTLE PONY SIGHTINGS IN NON-MLP TELEVISION CARTOONS

Several people have sighted a My Little Pony blanket on "The Simpsons" cartoon.  Evidently, Bart Simpson is hunting through his neighbors' trash, and finds a blanket.  He says something about Millhouse's mother having finally thrown away his old baby blanket.  Unfortunately, we have no video shots or direct quotes from the scene.

If you can obtain a frame from the cartoon showing the blanket, please
let us know!

Tabby located the following scene in an episode of "Pinky and the Brain."  Her description of the episode is quoted below the image.

First, for some background info on the episode.  (For the real basics,
Brain is a genetically altered lab mouse trying to take over the world; Pinky
is his insane assistant.)  In "Brain Drained," Brain has run out of original
ideas for world domination, and goes to Hollywood to collect ideas from wanna-be scriptwriters.

Here's where the ponies come in!  Two ladies come in to explain their
idea of "Pinky Winky and Brainey-Wainey", complete with theme song.  Their
idea is that the two mice learn to love each other and "brush their teeth,"
and they live in a house with fairies and Neanderthals and magic mushrooms
and etc. etc... and PONIES!!!  For a brief instant, they hold up a picture of
two frolicking pastel ponies.  One is blue and looks suspiciously like Sweet
Stuff; you can make out dots on her rump which could be gumdrops.  The other
one is pink.

In the cartoon show "Dexter's Lab," a number of episodes involve "Pretty Puff Pony Princesses," meant to imitate My Little Ponies.

Ember describes one episode as follows:
Dee Dee and her friends are playing with small horses with symbols, and
shiny black eyes named "Pretty Puff Pony Princesses". They have a white
castle with rainbows coming out of it, and a stable as playsets.  The
show does a dream sequence that features a "Pony Puff Princess" running
up a rainbow, to white castle with pictures of Ponies in the windows.

Shelley found another episode, which she discussed in the following message:
There's also another one (it was on last night) where Dexter and DeeDee try to join Pony Puff and Action Hank Clubs,
and they get their decoder sheets mixed up and end up doing each other's list of things to do to get initiated into the clubs.  Picture:  Dexter in a Tutu surrounded by guys in army fatigues.
:)  Anyway, it's like the darker side of ponies, cause Dexter has to rescue DeeDee from the Pony Puffs, who are trying to boil her in oil cause she's wearing army fatigues!
:)  Anyway, it's funny.  Pony Puffs kickin' butt!  But in the end, Action Hank and Dexter win.

BonBon found a third pony sighting in "Dexter's Lab."   She says:
I saw My Little Ponies on "Dexters Labratory!" The girl, DeeDee, was outside
playing with colorful ponies with patches on their thighs just like real My
Little Ponies!  There was a little plastic castle beside them and she
made them trot over to it.  She said "Oh, now lets go to DREAM CASTLE."

If you can obtain any frame from the cartoon showing the Pretty Puff Pony Princesses, please let us know!

Later some disaster befalls the ark . . . I believe it either sinks or catches on fire.

MY LITTLE PONY SIGHTINGS IN NON-MLP BOOKS

Taffeta noted that in the book Glubbyslyme, by Jacqueline Wilson, My Little Ponies make a guest appearance in Chapter 11.  According to Taffeta, the passage in which ponies are discussed reads as follows:

Characters - Mandy and Rebecca.

As Rebecca enters Mandy is playing MLP, and *making them gallop across a fence on her fluffy bedroom rug*

Mandy: What shall we play then, My little pony?

Rebecca: Ok, baggy this one with the pink hair.

Mandy: No you can't, that's Skyflier and she's my favourite and you call it a mane not *hair*.

Rebecca: Ok then I'll have this one.

Mandy: All right, that's Sunbeam.

Rebecca: No, I want to call him Pegasus...that's a magic horse with wings.  Look, I'll make his wings out of these tissues so he can f-l-y.

Mandy: No! Horses can't fly! It's called Sunbeam, not pegathing. Don't you know how to play My Little Pony properly you nitwit?

They go on to play *jumping fences* and *grooming manes*

Sugarberry indicated that My Little Pony Books are mentioned in the book, How to Write and Illustrate
Children's Books and Get Them Published
